28 years ago this spring, I graduated (with a double major in communications and political science) from @utmartin. UTM was (and still is) a red state, public university for working class and lower middle class kids like me. My favorite professor, E. Jerald Ogg, was a pro-George HW Bush conservative. Despite our huge political differences, he helped me immensely, and he is still a mentor and friend to this day. I feel blessed to have grown up in a time and place where people mattered more than party affiliation. We can’t let Trump drag us backwards on human rights, environmental progress and democracy. But we can’t let him drag us DOWN either — to his level of disrespecting and dehumanizing our opponents. I’m still a 2008 hope-and-changer. Neither Obama nor McCain went into the gutter that year. And I won’t follow Trump into the gutter this year. Let’s fight HARD for everything we believe in — including our belief that, as Americans, we can be a better people than this. We can vote against each other, without hating each other. We can disagree, without disrespecting or disregarding. And we can stop the haters — without becoming hateful ourselves.
